Detailed description
Governor
Voluntary
Clarkson Evans is the largest electrical and solar installer working in the new build housing sector, wiring over 24,000 homes a year. Established over 40 years ago, we now employ more than 850 staff across the UK and we work with the country’s major house builders. Training apprentices is a core part of our ethos. Through our award-winning in-house training we’re proud to be continually developing newcomers to the electrical industry.
The Role
We’re establishing a Board of Governors to play a crucial role in the strategic leadership and governance of the training centre. This voluntary position will provide valuable external insight and accountability to help us make sure we continue to meet the needs of our learners and build on the success that has allowed us to maintain our ‘Good’ Ofsted grading.
We are looking to appoint Governors who will contribute their knowledge and experience to support our decision-making processes. Being a Governor is not just about giving back; it's also about personal growth, allowing individuals to share ideas with other experienced leaders and gain a sense of satisfaction from contributing to important skills development for young people.
Responsibilities
The nature of individual governors’ input will vary according to their background and experience but it’s expected that all governors will:
- Prepare for, attend and actively participate in quarterly governor meetings.
- Assist the Board in strategically overseeing training activities, setting targets and monitoring performance.
- Use their professional and specialist skills to review and support decision-making, in a non-executive capacity.
- ‘Sense-check’ annual financial forecasts.
- Review training centre policies and procedures to help ensure they remain fit-for-purpose and complaint.
- Contribute ideas to support our objectives of maximising learner retention and attainment as well as diversity and inclusion.
- Provide oversight of our annual self-assessment process and input regarding processes related to leadership, management and governance in particular.
- Participate in appropriate induction, strategic planning, and training events to develop knowledge and skills, including reading educational material from various sources.

We are particularly interested in recruiting individuals with a background in further or higher education or in construction, or with accountancy or HR/Wellbeing experience.
Clarkson Evans is strongly committed to equality, diversity, and inclusion, drawing its governors from all sections of society. We are looking for members who can bring various skills, experience, perspectives, and backgrounds to the training centre.
Governors will be committed to the mission and values, able to understand and interpret complex information, have strong communication and interpersonal skills, and be capable of collaborative and constructive teamwork. High standards of integrity, impartiality, and confidentiality are crucial.
Time Commitment:
The role requires attendance at regular board meetings, typically held quarterly, preparatory reading, training, and occasional events. Governors are expected to commit up to half a day per month to their duties.
Application Process:
Interested candidates should submit a CV and cover letter outlining their interests and qualifications. Shortlisted candidates will be invited to an informal discussion.
Training
Training through the Education and Training Foundation will be provided. The online courses are mapped to three categories—core, proficient, and highly effective—to reflect different levels of FE governance experience.
Clarkson Evans is an equal opportunities employer and we’re proud of our fair and inclusive recruitment process.
We recognise the benefits of having a diverse workforce and welcome applications from candidates from all backgrounds. If you have any special requirements which would help you with our application process, please let us know.
