Spotlight on: Mentor Link

This month we find out more about volunteering for Mentor Link.

Q: What does Mentor Link do?

Mentor Link provides trained Volunteer Mentors to support children and young people who may be facing emotional or social challenges. This can include anxiety, depression, grief, friendship or family difficulties, low confidence, or emotionally based school avoidance.

Mentors work with children either in schools or at home, offering consistent one-to-one support to help them feel heard, valued and more able to cope with everyday challenges. By building trusted relationships, Mentor Link helps children improve their emotional wellbeing, resilience and engagement with education and life.

Q: What does being a volunteer for Mentor Link involve?

Volunteering with Mentor Link usually involves giving 1–2 hours a week to spend time with a child or young person who would benefit from additional emotional support.

Mentors provide a safe, non-judgemental space where children can talk openly, build trust and develop confidence. Through listening, encouragement and regular support, volunteers help children improve their self-esteem, strengthen social skills and learn positive coping strategies for difficult situations.

The role is flexible, rewarding and focused on creating meaningful relationships that can make a lasting difference to a child’s life.

Q: Why should someone volunteer for Mentor Link?

Volunteering with Mentor Link is a chance to make a genuine difference in a child’s life while also gaining valuable experience and personal fulfilment. Seeing a child grow in confidence, re-engage with school or simply feel happier and more supported can be incredibly rewarding.

Mentor Link provides full training, ongoing guidance and a friendly, supportive team, so volunteers feel confident and well-supported throughout their journey. Expenses are covered, and volunteers become part of a caring community committed to improving the wellbeing of children and young people across Gloucestershire.

NCVO’s Volunteering definition : “We define volunteering as any activity that involves spending time, unpaid, doing something that aims to benefit the environment or someone (individuals or groups) other than, or in addition to, close relatives. Central to this definition is the fact that volunteering must be a choice freely made by each individual. This can include formal activity undertaken through public, private and voluntary organisations as well as informal community participation and social action”
