Summary
Join us for a session of scrub clearance, soup and making nature-inspired masks, ready for our wassail on 19th Jan. Suitable for families with children aged 8+.Detailed description
You’ll meet members of the Cotswold Canals Connected team at Fromebridge Mill car park and head out onto the nature reserve. After a safety briefing, you’ll get stuck in using hand tools to remove scrub from the bank of the canal (a safe distance away from the water); this will make way for the restoration team to carry out dredging in this section later in the year and help to create space for native wetland habitats to flourish once the restoration is complete.
You’ll return to Fromebridge Mill to have some warming soup and bread. After lunch, you’ll stay indoors to take part in a workshop to create some nature-inspired masks, ready for the wassail event at Pockett’s Orchard (part of Fromebridge nature reserve) on Sunday the 19th of January. A wassail is an ancient, joyful gathering to bless the fruit trees in the orchard.
You can attend the volunteering session without going to the wassail, and vice versa, but you are very welcome to both.
This is Session 1 - 10 am to 2 pm (session 2 runs from 11 am to 3 pm and starts with mask making before heading out for the conservation task).
We welcome all family compositions, but children have to be at least 8 years old (sorry, no younger children/siblings due to the nature of the work) and need to be supervised by the accompanying adult(s) at all times. Sorry, no dogs.
Why Volunteer?
- Connect with nature, give it a helping hand and learn about local habitats and the canal restoration project
- Get out of the house, be active and spend time in the company of other families
- Get into the wassailing spirit for our event on Sunday
Bring:
- Clothing that will keep you warm (and dry). It is likely to be muddy and we’ll be working with brambles and there may be a bonfire, so don’t wear anything you are precious about
- Sturdy shoes or boots, e.g. walking boots or wellies with thick socks
- Drinks
- Gloves and cutting tools like secateurs, shears or loppers if you’d prefer to use your own, we’ll supply tools if you don’t have them
- Your enthusiasm!
We’ll provide tools and gloves as well as soup and bread for lunch, and biscuits to keep us going while working on the reserve. Please make sure to let us know of any dietary requirements (e.g. allergies, vegan, gluten-free) on the ‘application form’.
The session will run in most weather conditions. Toilets are located at Fromebridge Mill, c. 10 minutes from where we'll do the conservation work.
Please complete the 'application form' to book your place (it is not application process, just a booking). One booking per family group.
