Volunteers are a crucial part of our community
You can make a difference at Emmaus Gloucestershire, we have a range of roles for volunteers and can accommodate as many hours, or days, as you can spare. Our Cheltenham Shop is a hive of activity with opportunities also available in our online sales department. Please note that all of our in person volunteering roles have a minimum age requirement of 18, unless otherwise stated.
Example of duties include:
Bric-a-Brac - Sorting donations for sale/recycling/waste, cleaning items, pricing, and merchandising items on the shop floor.
Clothing, Linen & Shoes - Sorting donations for sale/recycling/waste, cleaning items, pricing, and merchandising items on the shop floor.
Till & Shop Support - Operating the till, dealing with customer queries face-to-face and over the phone, sorting, pricing, merchandising, cleaning, and organising deliveries and excess stock in the warehouse.
Online Sales Department - Taking photos, cleaning items, researching value, listing online, communicating with customers, purchasing postage/courier services online and preparing items for dispatch.
PAT Testing - Conducting function and PAT testing on all donated electrical items, sorting donations for sale/recycling/waste, cleaning items, pricing, and merchandising items on the shop floor. Will need, or be prepared to undertake, PAT training course prior to volunteering in the PAT Testing department. Training to be paid for by Emmaus Gloucestershire.

For many people who experience homelessness, one of the biggest obstacles they must overcome is a loss of self-esteem. Emmaus provides an opportunity to regain this, with a chance to make a real contribution to their community.
Emmaus communities are not hostels for the homeless; they provide a home for as long as someone needs it. For many, this support and stability is like the family they don’t have, providing a safe environment in which to settle and re-build their lives. Often this is an opportunity to overcome issues such as addiction, get support with mental health issues or rebuild relationships with estranged family.
Social enterprise is central to the Emmaus model as it provides meaningful volunteering opportunities for companions but also generates part of the funding required to maintain communities.
Emmaus communities deliver a significant return on investment. Research shows that for every £1 invested in a community, there is an £11 social, environmental and economic return, with savings to the benefit bill, health services and a reduction in crime.
