Summary

Samaritans is available 24/7 to ensure that, at a time of need, everyone has someone to talk things through with.

Detailed description

So many people have it in them to be a Samaritan volunteer...to touch another person's life when it really matters.

Our service is freely available to anyone at any time, offering emotional support to people when they are struggling to cope. Could this be an opportunity to share your existing abilities and talents, learn new skills, meet new people and, most importantly, be there for someone when they are in need?

Being a listening volunteer is perhaps the type of volunteering that we are best known for. Our support service is provided entirely by volunteers, and we listen to our callers by telephone from our branch in Gloucester. Shifts are between 3 and 4 hours long and it is expected that a Samaritan will do 6 shifts every 6 weeks which will include one night shift and one weekend shift.

You’ll receive full, really good training to prepare you for the kinds of conversations you’ll have. And when you start out, you’ll have a mentor with you, to give you confidence that you’re doing the right thing. There is close ongoing support too.

Many people choose to become Samaritans to 'give something back.' They are often surprised at how hugely rewarding this volunteering can be.

About Gloucester and District Samaritans

Samaritans vision is that fewer people die by suicide although our listening service is not limited to people who are experiencing those very dark thoughts, we also offer emotional support to anyone who is finding life tough.
We are active in the community, giving talks, supporting people and raising awareness of our service and have contacts with schools, local groups, railway stations, veterans groups and the hospital.
Full training is given, by the time you pick up the phone to a caller, you will feel able to give them emotional support and explore their feelings. This is a friendly and caring branch of over one hundred volunteers. We would love to hear from you if you think that this is something that you would like to do. We run regular information sessions if you would like to find out more.
