Respite Group Volunteer

 

Responsible To:   Gloucestershire Young Carers Development Worker – Youth Work, during sessions the Group Worker

 

Expenses:  Travel and out of pocket expenses agreed with Group Worker

 

Background

Young Carers are children and young people who take responsibility for the care of a family member experiencing chronic physical ill health, mental ill health, disability or problems with substance misuse. Gloucestershire Young Carers was established in 1993 to identify Young Carers throughout the county and to develop a network of support both with and for them. Gloucestershire Young Carers runs respite support groups as well as day trips and residentials, which provide a break from their daily caring role.

 

The Role of the Volunteer

The role will involve working with an activity leader/group worker to support young carers at their groups and on occasional day trips and residentials. This includes:

 

  • Planning and delivering age appropriate activities
  • Enabling and encouraging young carers to participate fully in activities
  • Ensure young carers are involved in all aspects of planning and organizing activities
  • Building a trusting relationship with young carers enabling them to share their concerns or worries
  • Attending appropriate meetings regarding young carers, including supervision, training and planning sessions
  • In line with Gloucestershire Young Carers Child Protection Policy, pass on any information regarding a young person’s welfare which could be harmful to themselves or others to the group leader

 

Training & Supervision

Volunteers will be fully supported and be required to attend relevant training and regular supervision.

Child Protection training is a requirement to this role. We will be able to organize this for you giving you a choice of a one-day course or a one session on-line course (either is free of charge). 

 

Other Requirements

Good listening skills

Ability to communicate effectively with children, young people and adults

Self-motivated – ability to work unsupervised and to use own initiative

Use of car and full driving licence is desirable.

GYC is engaged with over a 1000 young carers and young adult carers (aged 8 – 24 years) across Gloucestershire, caring for a family member experiencing long term illness, disability, mental ill health and/or problematic substance misuse.
We work with and for young carers providing services enabling and supporting them to build on their strengths, achieve their aspirations and ensure a positive transition to adulthood.
