About the role:

Here at Great Oaks, we run a group on a Monday from 10-3pm for people with life-limiting illnesses. We help support people during a difficult time in their lives, emotionally and physically, and enable people to do things that matter to them the most.


We would like to provide our patients with a warm, cooked meal at the Centre, and your role as a volunteer is to help cook or prepare a meal for approximately 10 people.


The meal provided is the patients main meal of the day, you are free to choose the menu or we can help if you would prefer. We also provide pudding for the patients however this can be something as simple as ice cream, rice pudding or fresh fruit salad. Some examples of main meals that we have provided in the past include fish and chips, cottage pie, curry to name a few.


For this role, we ask that you complete mandatory training which includes a food hygiene unit this is all free training which can be completed online at home or we can support you to complete it at the Hospice. We also require you to complete a level 2 food hygiene certificate which we will pay for and is a recongised qualification.


What you WON'T be expected to do:

  • Cook or prepare a Michelin star meal!
  • Assisting with moving or handling of patients
  • Feeding or toileting
  • Supply or buy food


How often we would like your support:

We are specifically looking for a Monday from 11am-2pm to prepare/cook/tidy away a meal for the patients who attend the Monday session. This can be rotated with other kitchen volunteers to suit personal commitments.


Skills and Experience:

You will need to:

  • Be reliable.
  • Ability to relate well to others, with a warm, caring approach.
  • Be able to work within personal and organisational boundaries.
  • Be open-minded and tolerant of different lifestyles and values.
