About HARE
HARE is a not-for-profit Community Interest Company focused on improving the well-being of people in the Forest of Dean, with a particular focus on children and families. We run events, crafts courses, walks in nature and children’s Forest school, based in our woodland near Mitcheldean, Gloucestershire. Find out more about us in our profile and on our website.
This role is similar to a charity trustee with the following benefits:
- Enhance your CV.
- Develop your skills - share skills and knowledge working alongside other directors.
- Use your skills and expertise to support a not-for-profit to make a difference in your local community.
- Help to improve mental health and well-being in the community.
- Contribute to creating custodians of nature and the environment - preserving nature for future generations.
- Be part of a small, fun and supportive team.
- Opportunities to attend events, crafts courses, volunteer site work days and team fire circles.
Time commitment:
Ideally between 1-3 hours per week, depending on your availability. However, it does not need to be weekly, if agreeing hours per month works better for you. Hours and time of day can be flexible. However, collaborative working is important to us, so we would like you to be in communication with the team and meet fairly regularly with another director (can be online), particularly when initially in the role.
The role:
Help us build a robust financial strategy, alongside our current team, to ensure organisational resilience.
• Work with the board to create a robust financial strategy.
• Support the team to ensure accurate book keeping in Quickbooks.
• Check project budgets and finances for funding bids.
• Work collaboratively with each project to plan and administer budgets and prepare financial information for end of project reports.
• Forecasting and finance planning, alongside the team.
• Attend quarterly board meetings.
• Liaise with our accountant at end of year.
Our board of directors works collaboratively. CIC Directors help make sure HARE makes good decisions and uses its resources most effectively. We make sure HARE does what it aims to do, is well-run, manages its finances properly and deals with risks. We also have to make sure that HARE is run in accordance with regulations and other relevant legislation.
Although the role of a Volunteer Director is unpaid, reasonable expenses can be reimbursed.
Support will be provided, if necessary, alongside an induction. The most important thing we want to see is a commitment to HARE's aims and enthusiasm for making a difference. If there is anything you’re not sure of, please email us and we will help you with the process.
If you have experience in business finance and would like to use your skills to give something back to the community, we would love to hear from you. Your support will help us grow and develop, and enable us to reach more people. We are a small team so just a few hours a week or per month, will have a big impact.
If you would like to talk with us before deciding whether to apply, please give us a call. You can find our phone number on our website. Please note we work part time, so may not always be able to answer.
About HARE
We run children and family workshops and craft workshops, events and retreats, incorporating mindful connection with nature, outdoor play, natural & heritage crafts and bushcraft. We manage our woodland sustainably, working with nature and being mindful of the endangered animals living on site. All our workshops are fully outdoors in our woodland, led by our experienced team members. We have a beautiful shelter over our fire circle and build other temporary shelters if it rains.
In 2023 & 2024 we ran:
- Forest Play - our weekly fully outdoor parent & toddler group.
- Forest School for home educated children, weekly group.
- Nurture in Nature - weekly well-being walks in the forest for new parents.
- Gardening for mental health in three local schools, funded by the NHS.
- Children's school holiday Forest Skills Workshops, with free places funded by HAF - funded by Gloucestershire County Council, through the Holiday Activities & Food scheme.
- Accessible Crafts - high ratio heritage crafts workshops for neurodiverse children, funded by the National Lottery Heritage Fund.
We've got lots of exciting plans for 2025. We would love you to join us to support our mission.
