Summary

RSPB Nagshead is looking for a Visitor engagement volunteer. You will get to enjoy nature, contribute to nature preservation, and work within a supportive team.

Detailed description

RSPB manages a big network of nature reserves which are havens for wildlife, and importantly very special places for people of all ages and abilities to visit and experience a nature rich landscape.

We are looking for volunteers who can help with all our visitor engagement activities, from welcoming people on arrival to giving information about events and activities.

As a Visitor Engagement Volunteer the tasks you will undertake will include some of the following:

  • Providing a friendly welcome to visitors when they arrive
  • Having conversations with visitors and finding out how you can help them enjoy their visit, whether that is recommending trails and walks or what activities they can get involved in
  • Talking about where they can see wildlife and what has been sighted recently
  • Setting people up with pond dipping or nature trail activities
  • Taking card payments for pin badges, activities and refreshments
  • Talking to the public about the work of the RSPB
  • Checking hides and visitor trails and engaging with visitors whilst out and about
  • Ensuring the visitor centre is clean and tidy, that leaflets are replenished, and information boards are up to date
  • Opening and closing the visitor centre
  • Full training and support will be provide for this role but you do need to be a ‘people person’ and have good communication skills

This is a really rewarding and enjoyable role. You will be working with a friendly team on a beautiful nature reserve, you will have the opportunity to make new friends and spend time outdoors. You will get to meet loads of new people in this role, enjoying conversation and helping people have a wonderful visit.

Our Visitor Centre is open from April to September at weekends and on Bank Holidays. During the summer holidays we are also open every Wednesday. You will be based at our Nagshead visitor centre and will be able to book onto morning or afternoon shifts, or volunteer for a whole day. Morning shifts are 10am-1pm. Afternoon shifts are 1pm-4pm. Every shift will need two people to be able to go ahead on the day, so you will not be required to work on your own.

There is always the opportunity to learn new things and gain skills through volunteering, by working on a reserve, you'll naturally learn all about how nature reserves are managed and the wildlife that is found there.
