Summary
Volunteer Assistant Warden role in Gloucestershire: 2 days/week for 6–12 months.Detailed description
The RSPB is offering a Volunteer Assistant Warden placement at its Gloucestershire reserves, including Nagshead in the Forest of Dean and Highnam Woods near Gloucester. This role is designed for individuals seeking practical experience in woodland conservation.
The placement requires a commitment of two days per week for a minimum of six months, with the option to extend to twelve months. Longer commitments provide access to additional training opportunities. The role involves hands-on habitat management tasks such as scrub control, ride management, tree felling, coppicing, and glade creation. Volunteers will also conduct biological surveys, including bird point counts, nest box monitoring, and surveys of dragonflies, butterflies, reptiles, and flora. Regular maintenance of reserve infrastructure, such as fencing, paths, hides, and benches, is also part of the duties. This volunteer role involves participating in work parties, including leading some sessions, and assisting with events and guided walks on occasional weekends. You'll gain practical experience in woodland conservation while contributing to community engagement activities.
This opportunity is ideal for those starting a career in conservation. Applicants should be over 18, possess a full UK driving license, and have basic IT, communication, planning, and organisational skills. While previous conservation experience is not essential, a genuine interest in conservation and the ability to work both independently and as part of a team is important. Travel expenses are reimbursed at 26p per mile within a 25-mile radius of the Gloucestershire reserves office in Parkend.
