Summary

The Safeguarding Champion helps our team to protect vulnerable adults we come across in our work from the risk of harm by others.

Detailed description

The role:

Our organisation teaches adults to read. Sometimes the people we teach are vulnerable and would be unable to protect themselves if someone else wished to take advantage of them. In the course of their work, our reading coaches may become aware of information suggesting the learner is being abused. The Safeguarding Champion has a key role to play to support us to protect the vulnerable person by reporting and actioning safeguarding issues.

To help our group to live up to its responsibilities to vulnerable adults, you will also be responsible for ensuring we are acting in a way that recognises our safeguarding responsibilities. You will need to be familiar with Read Easy Safeguarding policies, to train our management team on Safeguarding when new people join, and provide refresher training to the management team and the reading coaches annually. You will be the single point of contact for anyone within the group who wants to report suspected abuse, or who has concerns and needs advice. You may need to liaise with the local Adult Safeguarding Helpdesk, to seek advice or refer a case to them for further action in appropriate cases.

You will also arrange Enhanced DBS checks for all new reading coaches and some management roles on joining our team.

Finally, you will be part of the management team that runs our group and will attend our monthly meetings and contribute to our discussions and decisions on a wide range of issues.

The skills you will need:

Ideally you will have previous experience and understanding of adult safeguarding, but this is not essential. You must be able to work with discretion and confidentiality, have a strong commitment to improving the lives of the people Read Easy works with, and have good communication and people skills. You will need to use initiative and work independently. Read Easy volunteers must have a non-judgemental attitude and respect for others, with a commitment to equality and diversity, so that you can make everyone feel valued and included.

The role is approximately two hours a week but may vary from time to time. Reasonable IT skills necessary.

What is in it for you?

You will develop your knowledge and skills in relation to the safeguarding of adults. You'll meet and work collaboratively with a range of people committed to improving the lives of the most needy within the community.

About Read Easy Cheltenham & Gloucester

We teach adults to read. We provide a free, confidential one-to-one service for anyone over 18 in Cheltenham and Gloucester. All our coaches are volunteers trained to teach from manuals, books and other resources we provide. Our readers come to us from referral agencies or directly as a result of national or local publicity. We currently have 30 readers. We have 3 volunteer co-ordinators who match readers to coaches and oversee progress. We have no premises but use free facilities in local libraries and community centres. We also provide remote coaching by telephone or online to readers who prefer this.
