Summary

This is a very flexible volunteer role where volunteers will be required on an ad hoc basis to assist at events of their choice throughout the year.

Detailed description

Read With Me is a Gloucestershire organisation, which was set up to ensure that in the future every child will move to secondary school able to read well.

We run a number of events throughout the year all over the county. You can choose to attend as many or as few events as you want and can choose the activities you'd like to help with.

Event volunteers play a crucial role in helping to make our events happen and in creating a great experience for participants and attendees. They can help us to raise vital funds, raise awareness of our cause, offer practical support and help us spread the word about our work.

Events include:

  • Town Hall Teas
  • Lent Lunches
  • Running raffles and tombolas
  • Winter Fayre
  • Not So Secret Book Clubs (held during the school holidays, these are free half-day sessions providing outdoor activities for children including treasure hunts, arts and crafts activities, storytelling and story creating and a huge selection of free books for the children to choose and take home with them).

The role is very varied and could involve procuring raffle prizes, cake making, delivery and transport, writing greeting cards, making bookmarks, giving out medals and trophies, reading with the children, arts and crafts activities, and setting up and running stalls.

Regular breaks will be scheduled throughout the event for all volunteers and you will be supported at the event by a named point of contact in Read With Me. You will have the opportunity to take part in as many or as few activities as you prefer, to meet other volunteers and to gain and develop new skills.

We will require our event volunteers to have a basic DBS check and to complete Safeguarding Children Level 1 training.

About Read With Me

Read With Me provide one-to-one support in primary schools across Gloucestershire, to help every child learn to read well before they go to secondary school enabling them to fully partake in education.
Our volunteers hear children read once or twice a week for 10/15 minutes and this creates discussion and this in turn improves social and communication skills and builds confidence.
We provide training and support for all our volunteers and equip you with the resources needed, such as pens, notebooks and the much wanted reward stickers for the children.
