Summary
We would love to have more wonderful volunteers to help us teach disabled people to drive a horse & carriage on Tues & Thurs mornings. 09.00 to 13.00hrs.Detailed description
A great opportunity to help disabled people enjoy driving carriages.
What will you be doing?
- Our group have 2 horses and carriages that we use to help teach our lovely participants how to drive.
- We have 5 coaches that teach them driving. You do not need any experience at all, as we will teach you all you need to know.
- At the start of the day we check all the premises, carriages, equipment & the horses tack (that is all the straps that they wear to pull the carriages).
- Then we "tack up" (connecting the horses to the carriages).
- You will be shown how to assist the participants on & off the carriages safely.
- We then either work inside our arena doing activities, or outside along a private track, depending on the weather!
- We also have cyclists accompanying us as we drive - 2, or 4 for wheelchair users. As a cyclist you will learn how to help if necessary. This is a very important job to do as if there are any real difficulties, the cyclists can help resolve any problems guided by the coach.
- You can opt for positions that are not directly working with the horses i.e., meet & greet, hat fitting, booking in and chatting to our wonderful participants, carers & parents over a cup of tea & a biscuit or two.
What's in it for you?
- You will expand your experiences & knowledge by learning new skills around horses & have fun whilst doing so.
- You can learn so much about our participants, horses, carriages, how to tack up & untack a horse, horse care & even possibly, become a coach yourself.
- First aid and safeguarding courses will be available in time. We as a group will pay for that.
- If you choose to become a volunteer, you will be making our participants' time with us very special. You only have to hear their excitement to know that what we do & how we do it so beneficial to them & us. It really makes our day & I am sure it will make your day too.
- You don't need any experience as we will teach you everything you will need to know.
- We will need you to have a DBS check as we are working with vulnerable people. We can possibly arrange this for you, If necessary.
We are a very friendly group and it can feel like an extended family, which makes it so much more fun!
Thank you for considering us. If you have any questions, please contact Dave using the button above. To apply, please click Join and Dave will get in touch with you.
About Royal Forest of Dean Carriage Driving Group Riding for the Disabled Association
The Royal Forest of Dean Carriage Driving Group meet every Tuesday and Thursday mornings at Chaxhill House, Westbury on Severn. We offer carriage driving sessions for people with varying degrees of physical and mental disability, including wheelchair users. We operate inside on wet days, sunny days we have a field to use for cones and obstacles, and also drive down onto the common to see all the different wildlife. We always welcome new volunteers to the group.
