Summary

Seeking volunteer trustees for a dynamic almshouse charity in Cirencester

Detailed description

St John’s Hospital is an almshouse charity which has existed for over 700 years serving residents of Cirencester. We currently have 24 properties located in the centre of the town; some are listed buildings. In addition we own the 12th century Chantry of the Hospital of St John Evangelist (from which the charity gets its name) and two allotment sites.

We are looking for at least two new Trustees to join our committed board and help steer the charity through its next period of development. Trustees act as unpaid directors of the charity, who have overall control of it and work together to oversee its strategy, direction and aims. In essence, Trustees are responsible for making sure the charity does what it was set up to do. Our Clerk manages the day to day running of the Trust.

What is expected of our Trustees

  • Trustees meet every 2 months for two hours in our offices in Cirencester.
  • In addition, Trustees need to allow time to read papers ahead of meetings.
  • When appropriate, we use occasional working groups for particular issues and Trustees are invited to join these in line with their experience, skills and interests, for example resident welfare, or conservation of our older properties.

What we offer in return

  • A great opportunity not just to make a difference in an area that matters to you, but also to develop your skills.
  • You will be making strategic decisions, influencing and shaping projects and helping improve the health & wellbeing of our residents.
  • The age and nature of the properties, as well as the Chantry mean that we also have a key role in our community in conservation and safeguarding heritage.

We welcome applications from all ages and backgrounds, whether you are an experienced Trustee or wanting to take your first step at Board level.

For an information and application pack, please click 'join' and our Clerk to the Trustees will get back to you.

For an informal chat, please contact Meg Blumsom, Chair of the Trustees.
