Summary
A new group for 12-16 year olds, making a difference to the heritage and wildlife along the canal corridorDetailed description
Join our brand new group for young people to volunteer along the canal in Stroud.
What you will do
You'll get involved in different activities that will all make a positive difference to the environment, e.g. picking litter, sowing wildflowers, planting trees and cutting back vegetation. No previous experience needed.
What's in it for you
Volunteering is a great way to get out of doors and be active. You will make new friends, learn practical skills and get a better understanding about heritage and nature along the canal. If you are committed to all sessions, it can count as the volunteering element of the Duke of Edinburgh Award (bronze level).
When is it
We'll meet on Sunday afternoons, 2 - 4 pm on the following dates - you should be able to make most/ideally all of these:
- 2 March 2025
- 16 March 2025
- 30 March 2025
- 6 April 2025
- 4 May 2025
- 18 May 2025
- 8 June 2025
Where is it
We'll meet at different points along the canal between Wallbridge (Stroud) and Stonehouse, to be confirmed before each session.
What to bring
Sessions will go ahead in any weather, so you'll need sturdy boots/wellies and a waterproof coat (and ideally waterproof trousers) in case it rains. If you don't have these, let us know - you'll be able to borrow some. We'll provide gloves, all equipment as well as a snack and drink.
If all spaces are filled, do contact us to be put on the waiting list as we might be able to open up more spaces.
We are looking for more adults (18 years+) to join us as assistant leaders - get in touch if this is of interest to you.
This group is run by Cotswold Canals Trust and supported by Cotswold Canals Connected. Kindly funded by the National Lottery Heritage Fund.
About The Cotswold Canal Trust
Since the 1970s, volunteers have undertaken restoration and maintenance of the Cotswold Canals. With work now started on Phase 1B and exciting projects planned for Phase 2, we need more volunteers than ever to help achieve our goal of preserving, maintaining and improving the Stroudwater Navigation and the Thames & Severn Canal (i.e. the Cotswold Canals).
We have so many opportunities available from scrub bashing along the canal, dredging, operating a trip boat, sorting books at one of our bookshops to designing lock gates, the list is endless.
Cotswold Canals Trust Volunteers often speak of the new friendships, fun and sense of achievement they enjoy and we look forward to welcoming new volunteers to the team.
