Summary

This is a voluntary role, which offers the opportunity to play an important and meaningful role within a unique and fascinating Guild of Gloucestershire Crafts.

Detailed description

To take overall strategic, cultural, and operational responsibility of both the Guild Charity and trading Ltd company.

To ensure sound management in line with the aims and constitution of both.

To take an overview of the wider relevance of the Guild and well-made objects and the direction in which the Guild should travel and best thrive in the wider world and current economy.

The main operational tasks are to

  • Chair the monthly committee meetings, normally held by zoom, and attend any operational meetings in person when necessary.
  • Manage email correspondence and business in union with shop management.
  • Work closely with the Guild secretary to ensure the Guild processes are well managed, with records and reporting completed in a compliant and useful manner.
  • Maintain an overview of all ongoing activities and processes of the Charity and Limited Company, to ensure they are managed well and in a timely fashion.
  • Support the committee members by providing encouragement, feedback and a sounding board, acting where necessary as a ‘critical friend’.
  • Where issues or problems arise, support the committee to deal with them effectively.
  • Be an enthusiastic advocate for the Guild, open to opportunities that would be for the benefit of the Guild and its members.

This averages out at 3 to 4 days per month, but this can be variable. As such it suits someone with flexibility in their other commitments.

The chair will be supported by an excellent and loyal committee of Guild members and makers.

About The Gloucestershire Guild

Founded in 1933, the purpose of the Gloucestershire Guild of Craftsmen, is to foster and promote fine craftsmanship and good design. These aims came out of the vibrant Arts and Crafts Movement in the Cotswolds at the turn of the 20th century.

The Guild’s members are all professional makers. They are amongst the top craftspeople in the UK working across many disciplines including ceramics, glass, woodwork, textiles, jewellery and leather goods, creating unique functional and decorative objects. Members are dependent on sales and commissions for their livelihoods and many also teach, ensuring that craftsmanship and good design has a future.

The Gloucestershire Guild runs a shop and gallery in Montpellier, Cheltenham, hosts exhibitions, demonstrations, and craft skills workshops.
